Policy Role
The Ministry provides strategic policy advice, information and assistance to the Minister and other government agencies on key issues affecting Pacific peoples in New Zealand.
We carry out these roles by:
-
informing the Minister and government agencies of Pacific peoples' needs and aspirations
-
influencing and monitoring government policies and initiatives that affect Pacific peoples
-
working with and encouraging other government agencies to help meet Pacific peoples’ needs and aspirations across sectors (for example, in health or housing)
-
reporting on key projects that improve opportunities and enhance the lives of Pacific peoples and help to reduce inequalities (for example in education or justice)
-
developing innovative projects that will benefit Pacific peoples
-
fostering Pacific leadership
Our advice is supported by research, the collection of data and environmental scanning work. We keep abreast of global and local developments in the economy and social structure, to identify issues that may affect Pacific peoples. This ensures that we can react appropriately to new developments or findings, for instance by drawing up policy advice or setting up projects that respond to the issues.
