Who We Work With
THE MINISTER AND ADVISORY GROUPS
The Minister of Pacific Island Affairs
The Ministry is accountable to New Zealand’s Minister of Pacific Island Affairs, Hon Georgina te Heuheu.
You can find contact details, biographical details, recent speeches and media releases on the Minister's pages on the Beehive website.
Hon Georgina te Heuheu is also Minister for Courts, Minister for Disarmament and Arms Control, and Associate Minister of Māori Affairs.
The Minister’s Advisory Council
The Minister of Pacific Island Affairs’ Advisory Council provides an independent community perspective on issues that impact on Pacific peoples in New Zealand. It advises the Minister on matters related to the social, cultural and economic life of Pacific peoples in New Zealand; and it helps to disseminate information to and from Pacific peoples.
The Council’s membership reflects Pacific communities living in New Zealand. It reports directly to the Minister, and meets as required, usually twice a year. We provide administrative services.
The Pacific Women’s Economic Development Advisory Board
The Advisory Board’s role is to oversee the effective implementation of the Pacific Women’s Economic Development Plan (PWEDP), which was launched in tandem with the Pacific Economic Action Plan (PEAP) in 2007. This plan focuses on four key areas: education, workforce development, business development and leadership for Pacific women.
The Board reports directly to the Minister of Pacific Island Affairs and to the Minister of Economic Development.
The Pacific Economic Development Senior Officials Group
The Senior Officials Group was convened to oversee the implementation of the goals in the Pacific Economic Action Plan (PEAP), launched in 2007. The Group co-ordinates the inter-agency work on economic development for Pacific peoples, monitors success in reaching milestones in the PEAP, and updates the action plans.
It reports to the Minister of Pacific Island Affairs through this Ministry.
Work with other NZ Government Departments and Agencies
The Pacific Business Trust
The Pacific Business Trust (PBT) was established in 1985 as a charitable trust to boost business ownership and economic participation by Pacific peoples in New Zealand. It delivers services and programmes to promote Pacific entrepreneurs and to assist New Zealanders of Pacific descent to start, develop and sustain successful businesses.
The PBT receives ongoing government funding in return for providing these services (but is not owned by the Crown). The Ministry of Pacific Island Affairs manages the Crown’s relationship with the PBT through its annual purchase agreement.
Other government departments and local authorities
We work in partnership with various New Zealand government departments and agencies on specific projects which play an important part in improving outcomes for Pacific peoples.
We also work with local authorities and other regional organisations to help Pacific people gain access and contribute to regional services and programmes.
