12 Tips for managing your money

1

Make sure you get the best deal when sending money home. Compare costs at www.sendmoneypacific.org.

 2

Set yourself a goal like saving $20 a week or paying off your credit card in 6 months. When you achieve it, celebrate, but only a little.

 3

Going into debt is a big decision. Make sure you can afford to repay any loans, including the interest. Read more about going into debt at www.sorted.org.nz

 4

Don't rush or be pressured into making a decision, especially by door-to-door salespeople. Take your time and get advice.

 5

Children learn about spending and saving money by following their parents example. Set a good example.

 6

Save as a family. Like dieting, it's much easier to trim the fat from your budget if your loved ones are helping you.

 7

Quick and easy ways to make money are quick and easy ways to lose it. Don't be tricked into giving away your money. Visit www.scamwatch.govt.nz for more information on money scams.

 8

Instant cash loans can be very expensive. Extra charges can quickly add up and get you into financial difficulty. If you need to borrow money, shop around. Don't overpay!

 9

Say no to late fees and higher interest charges! Pay your bills on time.

 10

Before you borrow money, make sure you know what the interest rate is and what all the fees are. Don't be shy to ask questions.

 11

Don't be influenced by what your friends are buying. In the end, the only one paying your debt is you!

 12

Think twice before buying. Ask yourself, "Do I really need this?"
