PM launches Pacific Youth Awards - 31 August 2010

High-achieving young Pacific New Zealanders will be recognised for their outstanding contributions through the newly-created Prime Minister’s Pacific Youth Awards.

Launching the awards at Bishop Viard College in Porirua Prime Minister John Key said the initiative is designed to celebrate the endeavours of young Pacific people across a range of disciplines, as well as provide a platform for further achievement and leadership.

“New Zealand’s Pacific population is growing. A large of part of our country’s international competitiveness will depend on how well we capitalise on the skills and talents of Pacific New Zealanders, and it’s vital young Pacific leaders are recognised for their achievements and potential,” says Mr Key.

The three awards are:

“I am delighted one of our top tertiary institutions and two globally-successful businesses have come on board to help some of our most talented young people seize new opportunities,” says Mr Key.

“These awards will help develop leadership potential among Pacific youth, as well as opening up career or study options for the recipients.”

Nominations for the awards close on 11 October, with winners announced on 19 November.

Package to help young Pacific people progressing

A PACKAGE to build skills, qualifications and entrepreneurship amongst young Pacific peoples is approaching the final stages, the Ministry of Pacific Island Affairs said today.

Dr Colin Tukuitonga, Chief Executive, said the Ministry will soon be inviting tender applications from a number of Pacific agencies and organisations in Auckland who had built a reputation in this area including the Pasifika Education Centre, the Pacific Business Trust, the Village Trust, C- Me Mentoring and the Pacific Economic Development Agency.

“In the selection process we will be looking for a cost-effective, well developed and compelling business plan. The organisations should also have a good reputation and a track record for delivering Pacific youth orientated programmes.

“Since last year’s jobs summit some of these agencies, supported by Te Wananga o Aotearoa, have put a number of young Pacific people through courses which incorporate business development skills, administration, computing and so forth.  Demand has been such that some of their courses were over-subscribed.”

Dr Tukuitonga said the Ministry was also talking to other key players such as the Tertiary Education Commission, Industry Training Organisations, the Department of Labour and the Ministry of Social Development about how the agencies can improve their effectiveness for Pacific youth.

“Investing in the future success of Pacific peoples is critical to New Zealand’s future.

“By 2025 Pacific peoples will be almost 10 percent of our population.  It’s in all our interests to ensure that today’s young Pacific people are equipped for their future roles.”

Dr Tukuitonga said the Ministry expected to have final proposals by late September.

New funding for advancing Pacific people’s development has come from Budget 2010.

Photo competition offers chance to win a trip to Samoa or Tonga

Budding photographers will have a chance to test their photography skills and possibly win a trip to Samoa or Tonga through a calendar competition recently launched by the Ministry of Pacific Island Affairs.

The 13 best pictures will appear in the 2011 MoneyPACIFIC calendar and the winners will receive a $100 prize from Westpac NZ while the photographer whose photo is selected for the calendar cover will receive a return airfare to either Samoa or Tonga with Air New Zealand.

Ministry of Pacific Island Affairs project manager of MoneyPACIFIC, Kim Hailwood, says the calendar aims to provide simple but important tips to increase Pacific peoples’ financial knowledge and awareness. These are expanded in a series of advertisements running on Pacific radio.

‘Last year we produced the first-ever MoneyPACIFIC calendar, which has as its point of difference a financial tip for each month.  Pacific Island communities in New Zealand, Samoa and Tonga snapped it up. This year, we’re planning to double the number we produce, printing 70,000 bilingual copies in Samoan/English and Tongan/English,’ Ms Hailwood said.

Photographs must have Pacific community, church, school or family groups at their heart and must be taken either in New Zealand, Tonga or Samoa.  Entry forms can be downloaded from www.sendmoneypacific.org/publications.cfm

The competition closing date is Tuesday 31 August 2010. Entry is free and contestants can enter up to three pictures.

MoneyPACIFIC is a multi-agency project jointly supported by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, Ministry of Pacific Island Affairs, and the New Zealand Aid Programme.
