Inaugural SBN Business Awards will celebrate Samoan success
It has been a long time coming, but Samoan entrepreneurial success and the contribution the Samoan business community makes to the New Zealand economy will be recognised and celebrated at the Samoa Business Network (SBN) Business Awards.
Staged for the first time on September 28, the Awards were officially announced by SBN Samoa Chair Afamasaga Jackie Curry at the SBN and New Zealand Samoa Trade and Investment Commission (NZSTIC) Independence Day event held in June.
Co-founder and Chair of SBN Laura Keil-Hall says a specific awards celebration for Samoan businesses has taken a long time to become a reality.
“It is really important for us to recognise and celebrate Samoan entrepreneurial success; and to showcase our Samoan business owners and operators and their achievements,” Laura says.
“Not only that,” she continues, “but the awards will acknowledge the contribution the Samoan business community makes to our New Zealand Economy.
“This hasn't been done before and it is about time we did it.
“It is also a way to encourage our people to be entrepreneurial and start thinking about starting a business,” Laura adds.
Nine award are up for grabs at the SBN Business Awards, including Excellence in Business; Excellence in Construction & Trades; Excellence in Hospitality; Excellence in Professional Services; Excellence in Innovation; People's Choice Award - Favourite Business; Young Entrepreneur of the Year; Start-up of the Year; and Award for a Samoan-based Business.
Applications and nominations are open and close on August 7, before finalists are announced on August 24.
Laura and Afamasaga Jackie urge all the Samoan businesses in New Zealand to apply.
“We have worked really hard to bring this initiative into fruition and we just want to honour and celebrate our hard working, successful Samoan businesses.”
The Network is hoping to stage the awards bi-annually, and this year’s inaugural event will be a double celebration as it will also mark five years since SBN was formally established.
It is just one of the initiatives SBN has got underway recently.
In December 2017, SBN in Samoa staged its inaugural SBN Business Innovation and Young Entrepreneur Awards to celebrate and recognise local Samoan based businesses' efforts creating business opportunities online.
This initiative was well received by its members and the local business community.
SBN will be providing further support for these businesses in Samoa, by delivering a Digital Marketing Workshop in early August 2018.
