2024 Toloa scholarship update

Congratulations to all 2024 Toloa scholarship recipients who have been notified.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, there was a delay in the launch of the scholarship this year. This has impacted on the timeline for informing applicants, schools and tertiary institutions. This also included information on contracts and invoicing. We are pleased to note that all have now been contacted.

For Secondary scholarship recipients, we will keep your school informed about device deliveries which are expected to commence in the next two weeks. There will be a slight delay in the STEM Challenge as well; we will keep you informed about dates as soon as we can.

About the scholarships

The Toloa Secondary School Scholarships aim to inspire and support Pacific students in their engagement with STEAM: Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths.

Toloa supports Pacific Peoples in STEAM pathways over a whole of life approach from ECE, primary, intermediate, secondary, tertiary through to the workforce.

Now in its eighth year, the Toloa funds are achieving its goal of helping Secondary School students thrive in Science, Technology, Engineering Arts and Mathematics (STEAM).

Toloa scholarships are also available for tertiary students. Applications for the Toloa Secondary School Scholarships closed on Monday 30 October 2023.

Toloa’s Vision is to make a transformational impact in the communities we live in. Toloa Scholarships support Pacific students in Years 9 through 13 to pursue studies in STEAM. The scholarship seeks to inspire and support Pacific student’s early stages of STEAM academic engagement.

Students who have previously received Toloa Scholarship are able to apply again this year.

What is STEAM?

STEAM refers to Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths subjects.

STEAM skills and knowledge are not new to Pacific people.

The Toloa programme champions that Pacific peoples come from a lineage of navigators, explorers, innovators, and experts in STEAM. STEAM skills are adaptable in a vast ocean of career pathways and opportunities.

We acknowledge there are different interpretations and understandings of defining ‘A’ in STEAM, it’s important to note that the Ministry for Pacific Peoples offers a unique perspective when defining ‘A’ in STEAM, which is presented through a Pacific perspective.

Defining ‘A’ in STEAM through a Pacific lens

The incorporation of ‘A’ reflects the blending of Pacific arts, knowledge, and creative approaches with scientific knowledge in technical contexts.
‘A’ in STEAM encapsulates Pacific cultural knowledge and expresses creativity and its connection to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
‘A’ is the intertwining and weaving together of Pacific creativity and traditions with the exploration of the natural world across different subjects. It’s also about nurturing and growing your creative skills along your STEAM journey.

Applications for the 2024 Toloa Secondary School Scholarship Fund have now closed. The closing date was Monday 30 October 2023.

What does the scholarship package include?

The Toloa Secondary School Scholarship package includes both monetary and non-monetary components.

Monetary

$1,000 excl. GST towards school and/or provider fees

An invoice from your school will be required and funds will be paid directly to your secondary school to manage on your behalf. The school will be able to release your funds for study-related costs as agreed by the Toloa funding team, the Parent/Caregiver, student and the school.

Non-monetary

Digital device (a refurbished device) provided by Ministry for Pacific Peoples.

The device part of the scholarship package is sent to your school, for delivery to you directly.

Toloa Certificate and gift

Who can apply

To be eligible, applicants must:

Demonstrate commitment to Pacific language and/or culture.
Be aged 12-14 years old / in Year 9-10 in 2023 OR aged 13-18 years old / in Year 11-13 in 2023
Be enrolled in a New Zealand secondary school, alternative education or verified home school
Provide school reports and academic results for the previous 12 months
Be enrolled in 2 or more STEAM subjects and provide list of these
Hold New Zealand citizenship or permanent residency
Provide a letter of support from one independent referee (such as school counsellor, Pacific Liaison Officer, community, church, youth groups, sports coach, tutors, mentors - anyone except for a family member)

Register an account on our funding application portal.
Select the 'open funding rounds' in the top menu.
Select the Toloa scholarship year level you would like to apply for and fill in an application.

What's not funded

Toloa Secondary School Scholarships are not available for:

Students that are not enrolled in a formal New Zealand secondary school, vocational training provider, alternative education or verified home school
Students that are not enrolled in STEAM subjects
Travel expenses locally, nationally, and internationally
For-profit activities
Initiatives that are not aligned with the priorities of this scholarship fund
Programmes and activities delivered overseas, including the NZ realm countries
Wages, salaries, infrastructure, fixed assets and capital expenditure
Debt repayment or debt servicing.

If you are enrolled in STEAM subjects at a New Zealand tertiary institution, please apply for the Toloa Tertiary Scholarships instead.
